DRUIDS

DRUIDS' goals are to help designers and developers throughout Datadog build products and features that feel familiar to customers, interconnected, and highly usable — and to do it all efficiently.

Key benefits include:

• Make design faster and more confident: Designers and developers can do their jobs more quickly and work more intuitively when they can take advantage of the hard work and thinking that has been applied in the past. This minimizes time-to-value and smooths the path from design to implementation.
• Consistency is also only a means to an end — predictability is the payoff that makes a more usable product: We should not pursue consistency for its own sake. Users benefit from established components and patterns when repetition makes them easier to understand. This can be especially true as new products and features are added. Consistency is a useful tool, but it should not be an obstacle to creating the right solutions.
• Balance between the established and the new: DRUIDS does not define what is possible to create; it is here to make it easier to design and build what we already know best. Strive for the best design and technical solutions for the product you are building. Take advantage of the work already done — but seek out new designs and solutions to push the platform forward, too. When giving feedback on new work, if you see something unfamiliar, don’t assume it must be brought into existing patterns and solutions. Instead ask how using DRUIDS and known patterns might help, and focus on the positives.

As of now, DRUIDS is for Datadog internal use only. We’ve made the docs public to share our approach to building UI at scale, to show how we try to make naturally complex workflows feel as user-friendly as possible, and to highlight ways we keep DRUIDS an integral part of the daily workflow for hundreds of people throughout Datadog.
